Lesson Plan

Title: Knowing Your Body

Concept: Students will be taught a short lesson on anatomy and the importance of knowing about their bodies in order to maintain health.

Standards Addressed:
-knows names of body parts. (HE.A.1.1.1)
-understands positive health behaviors that enhance wellness. (HE.A.1.1.2)
-knows and practices good personal health habits. (HE.B.1.1.1)

General Goals:
I want to show the students easy ways to keep healthy and make them understand how important health is.

Specific Objectives:
To understand anatomy and have greater understanding of their bodies as well as understanding what promotes health and what is unhealthy.

Required Materials:
Picture of the human body, with major organs labeled
Picture of the human body, with major muscles labeled

Anticipatory Set (lead-in):

The students will be asked to tell about their bodies and which parts of their bodies they feel they use the most.  This will engage them in the topic.

Step-By-Step Procedures:
The teacher will start off by asking the students what they know about their bodies and showing that perhaps there is a lot they could learn.  The teacher will then show the pictures of the human body and ask the class which parts they think are most important and why.  This will lead into an explanation of the major organs and muscles and their functions.  Then the teacher will explain how important it is to keep healthy and know about your body in order to respect yourself.  The lesson will end with the teacher leading the students in a short yoga class.  This ill involve simple stretching, and will provide a simple way for the students to help their bodies.  Flexibility is one very important part of health.

Plan for Independent Practice:  For homework, students will be given a picture of a human body with the major muscles and organs and they will have to label certain parts that will have blank lines pointing to them.

Closure:
Students will be asked if they still value the same parts of their body most that they did before and also the stretching will tie everything together.

Assessment based on objectives:
The students will have to once again label the human body picture but this time it will be in class from memory (this will be two days later).

Adaptations (for students with learning disabilities):
The students with disabilities will color the human body rather than labeling.  They will not take the quiz.  If they have physical disabilities they will only do the stretches they are capable of.

Extensions (for gifted students):
Gifted students will have an extended assignment on the functions of the heart and how other organs benefit from a healthy heart.

Possible Connections to Other Subjects:
Science because of the anatomy lesson, P.E. because of the yoga.
